I’m not asking for less money, but for more money for culture”, said Frits Bolkestein (applause), “and I want to finance this with funds from development aid.” This statement did not meet with universal approval. In fact, loud booing ensued. This took place during a remarkable performance by the prominent VVD [People’s Part for Freedom & Democracy] politician at the ‘Nederland schreeuwt om cultuur’ [‘The Netherlands Screams for Culture’] demonstration in Amsterdam on 22 November 2010, when more than 100,000 people demonstrated in almost seventy towns and villages throughout the Netherlands against the proposed cuts to subsidies for the arts and culture, and increases to BTW [Dutch VAT] and ticket prices. Julian Hetzel has made this into a lecture/performance. When is art art? And how does it relate to society? How can development aid be transformed into art?
